Novara

Novara

The Province of Novara has a population of over 358 thousand. It is seventh for extension in Piedmont with the homonymous city of Novara as capital of the province. It borders on the north with the Province of Verbano Cusio Ossola which was established by parcelling out Novara, on the west with the Provinces of Biella and Vercelli and on the east with Lombardy.
Situated in the far eastern section of Piedmont, already a few millenniums before Christ this area was inhabited by the Liguris, later followed by the Celts (IV century B.C.). The territory of the Province of Novara represents the farthest western ramification of Insubria (the provincial organization is member of the Regio Insubrica community). It extends between the Sesia and the Ticino rivers which for a tract represent respectively the eastern and western borders.
Traced out exclusively to ensure to Verbania the 200,000 minimum inhabitants required for the establishment of a new province, on the South and on the North the borders follow the "Fontanili Line" between the Lower Novarese area and Lomellina, roughly cutting in half the Vergante area.

VCO - Verbano Cusio Ossola

This very interesting area from a naturalistic standpoint includes part of the lake to which it owes its name: Lake Verbano with the renown Borromeo Islands and the smaller lakes, of Mergozzo and of Orta.
Part of the territory is however constituted by mountains and in addition to the National Park of Val Grande, the Parks of Alpe Veglia and Alpe Devero, it offers many other fascinating valleys among which Val Formazza and Val Divedro. Monte Rosa is another striking attraction with its breathtaking and extremely challenging eastern side, towering over Macugnaga. The VCO was established by merging three distinct geographic territories: Verbano, Cusio and Ossola. Within the territory of the province are the Sacred Mount of Domodossola and the Sacred Mount of Ghiffa, extraordinary monumental complexes, which in 2003 were declared by UNESCO patrimony of the humanity together with five more Piedmontese Sacred Mounts.

Lake of Orta and Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore is the second largest Italian lake after Lake of Garda. It is shared by Lombardy (province of Varese), Piedmont with the provinces of Novara and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and in the northern part by Switzerland. The entire lake area, inhabited since way back in time, along the centuries it witnessed encounters and conflicts between men and civilizations, as it represented a natural transit path to central Europe. Its strategic position also explains the presence of fortified systems that often took advantage of its specific natural conditions.

Lake of Orta is situated in the province of Novara west of Lake Maggiore from whichh it is separated by mount Mottarone). In the central section of the eastern shore is Orta San Giulio, a vacation resort dominated by the Sacred Mount, where can be admired 20 chapels frescoed by the local painter Morazzone. Right across from it is the little isle of Saint Giulio with the homonymous basilica dating back to the IV century.
